“I get a lot of fulfillment in this work, because we’re making a difference in people's lives by guiding them through financial decisions during significant life changes. Sometimes people just need advice, but other times they need real help as the result of either a financial burden or windfall. Just being able to guide people through those moments and help them make the right decision is very rewarding.”

Fresh out of James Madison University with a B.A. in accounting, Marcy Kozlowski began her career at an investment management firm in Pennsylvania and earned her designation as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in that state. In the early years of her career, she built her expertise in corporate accounting, auditing, and insurance.

After she and Dave had kids, she stayed at home to raise them. But those around her knew she’d earned her CPA. “Everybody was like, ‘Oh, can you do my taxes?’” she says. “Even though my work had nothing to do with taxes, I understood them. So I started doing taxes for friends and family.”

As their own family grew, she joined Verus each tax season to help carry the load. In 2023, as she and Dave became empty nesters, she joined the firm on a year-round, part-time role as a senior tax planner, helping prepare and manage returns.

Outside of Verus also means time outside: hiking, playing tennis and pickleball, and gardening. Marcy volunteers at Imago Dei Neighborhood School and the Kozlowski family are active members of Spring Run Presbyterian Church, where she and Dave teach Sunday School.
